Body Mass Index

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of a person's body fat , calculated using height and weight metrics. Basically, body mass index compares your height and weight with that of the average for people of the same height. If you are above or below average, body mass index shows that you are over- or underweight.

Body mass index is a rough gauge of your fitness, and it is not necessarily indicative of a fitness or lack thereof. For example, a short bodybuilder could have very little body fat, but because he weighs more than the average person of his height, his body mass index could indicate that he is overweight. On the other hand, if a person has lost a lot of muscle mass due to age or illness, his body mass index could indicate that he is at normal weight, when in fact he needs to improve his fitness or lose body fat. You can find a body mass index calculator at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

Despite its limitations, body mass index has been strongly correlated with other obesity measures. Employee Wellness USA is happy to measure the BMI of your workforce as part of your on-site health screening .
