Barbituates are a family of depressants that have taken the lives of a number of famous people, including Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Jean Seberg and Jimi Hendrix.
Barbituates may have gotten their name from a celebration of the day of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of artillerymen, which reportedly was taking place at the same time that the discoverer of the drug was celebrating his find with his colleagues. Popular in the early twentieth century, barbituates create an alcohol-like "buzz," but as the user finds his tolerance increasing, the margin between the amount needed to get a buzz and the lethal amount becomes narrower and narrower. Essentially, barbituates are dangerous, and without a good substance abuse testing plan, they can easily kill an employee before you realize the presence of a problem.
